Lithium: Is the electrolyte that nursing students seem to forget about. It used to treat the manic phase of the bipolar state. Just like the Energizer bunny, people who need lithium keep going and going.... Ok so here is the Quick Facts of Lithium.

Drug Name: Lithium

Usual Dose: 300-600mg 3-4 times/ day

Purpose: Anti-manic, Anti depressant BIPOLAR disorder

Side Effects: Neuro changes (seizures, dizziness, impaired memory, confusion) GI disturbances (abd pain, diarrhea, nausea)

Nursing Care:  Check lithium levels twice a week during start of therapy, monitor mood,  monitor I & O with renal and thyroid function.
